02-17-2006, 08:51 PM. I plan to Convert my bench grinder into drum a sander. I will remove the wheels and put a 1/2" chuck on it. In the chuck, I could either put a sanding drum, Flap sander or a flex shaft. The shaft on the grinder mesure 1/2" so I will put a chuck from LeeValley part #68K05.01 (only 7.50$ US or 10$ CAN).

By attaching an abrasive flap disc you can turn the angle grinder into a sander and use it for sanding wood, metal, welded joints etc. The drawback is that, you cannot use it to flatten an uneven surface like a belt sander. While it is not a method to produce accurate results, it works well to remove material fast.

You can also convert it to operate at a variable speed (solder in a adjustable resistor or capacitor) but what you wont get is a sander that will bring a lot of power at low speeds. So what I'm telling you is: You can do whatever you want, but I'm sure you won't get the result you are hoping for.
