The G0704 is a bench top mill; smaller mills are often called mini-mills, and the larger ones are knee mills. It seems to me that the mini-mills are just too lightly built to be stiff enough for cutting dovetails in slides. The knee mills, such as the Bridgeport, are too big (2,000#+) and expensive ($5,000+) for my situation.

First, I don't have room for a Bridgeport. Second, I haven't found a worthwhile Clausing 8520 or similar. I would appreciate some cold, honest feedback on product "quality" from anyone who own the Grizzly (G3102) or Harbor Freight (40939) 6x26 vertical knee mills. I can get the HF shipped to my door for $1600 while the Grizzly runs $2900.

I'm new to the forum, But I've been thinking about converting a old 20" Walker Turner drill press into a small benchtop mill/drill set-up. In my case I'm thinking it may be possible to buy just the inner R8-spindle shaft part# P0705011-6 for a Grizzly G0705 Mill/Drill, Then machine the shaft and/or the ID of the Walker Turner's quill to get a standard bearing to fit.

Bolting the mill to a bench, you need to account for the screw, or lose an inch or so of vertical table travel. Shortly after I got the g0727, I scarfed a used RU40, off craugslist for $200, so it looks like the G0727, will collect dust in the corner of the garage.

Feb 2, 2014. #5. I can't speak to any of those machines, but Grizzly's customer service is top-notch. My G0704 won't display rpm and they've been more than happy to throw parts at it while under warranty. But, I want a knee mill and that size doesn't fit my low-ceiling garage so I ordered a Precision Matthews PM-935.

I saw the G0796 mill on the first day it was shown on the Grizzly website and instantly compared it to the G9902. It was a hands down winner because of the 3HP motor, DRO, the Halogen work light, the snazzy white paint that matches my Grizzly metal lathe but most importantly because of the transmission.

This is much larger than the PCNC 440 mill. The vertical travel height is 16", which is almost double that of the other mills on this list. This mill uses a brushless DC motor for the spindle with a smooth belt drive system that's much quieter than other converted benchtop CNC mills like the Grizzly G0704 CNC Mill.
