Re: new lee valley belt sander question As Gwilki mentioned earlier, I don't think that holder is meant to work with the sander/grinder. I've had the same sander for at least 10 years and use it primarily for knife sharpening although it's also useful for numerous little sanding tasks. 95% of the time I have the 15-micron belt on the machine and it does a great job for knives.

You can also get metal working kingspor belts at Lee Valley. I probably use the 42 inch belt sander 10 to 1 over the bench grinders for metal working/shaping (certainly) and sharpening. If I want to clean something up or turn a bolt into a nail I use the 6 inch bench grinder, but only because I would rather wear out that than the belt sander.

Hi sharp, I started with the 1x42 sander/grinder from Lee Valley before upgrading. I got very comfortable using it and actually found my 2x72 kinda awkward for a short while. It cost about $120.00 but does not come with a motor. I just sold it on Kijiji but I've got probably six old electric motors that turn about 1750 rpm that I don't need.
I now have a 1" strip sander that I use for a lot of sharpening, both knives, scissors, and yea some turning tools. Works much better than the small belt sander and it's much quicker to change belts. The one I got is from Lee Valley and you have to add the motor and switch. Went from those to my old Craftsman 6" 3450 rpm grinder with a gray wheel.

Jan 18, 2010. #6. It's still the only grinder I have, and the selection of belts from lee valley is relay the only thing that makes it worth having in my opinion. The only thing I would like is for the full length of the platen to be usable, and the tracking system is crappy. I have tried using the top wheel, but its a bit heavily crowned.
